The Olympic Flame Lantern is the equipment for reserving pilot fire of the Olympic flame, mainly used for activities such as pilot fire reception, flame lighting and flame demonstration. The IOC required that the holy flame should keep burning during the Torch Relay in order to ensure the dignity of the flame and the purity of the Torch Relay. Once the torch dies out, the torch must be lighted with the pilot fire in the Olympic Flame Lantern, so as to guarantee the main torch in the opening ceremony is lighted by the Olympic holy flame.
Design
The design inspiration of the “Auspicious Cloud” Olympic Torch comes from the traditional paper scroll of China and the colors derive from the lacquer red in Han dynasty. The torch was evenly divided from top to bottom with uniform proportion. The pattern of auspicious cloud and the technological design of three-dimensional relief makes the whole torch elegant and gorgeous, with dignified connotation.
With length of 72CM, weight of 985 gram, the burning time of the torch is 15 minutes and the flame height is 25 to 30CM. It can keep burning under the circumstances of 65 kilometers per hour strong breeze and 50 millimetres heavy rain.
The Olympic Cauldron is mainly used for the celebrations of Torch Relay. Lighting the cauldron means the end of the relay running event and the beginning of the celebration. The Olympic Cauldron of Beijing adopted the idea of “round sky and square ground” and was based on the design elements of the Chinese bronzed ware –Ding and pattern of “auspicious cloud”. It forms a coordinating series with the Olympic Torch and the Olympic Flame.

Altogether 26, 440 torches was produced, with over 8,800 torch experiments which last 130 days and 137 thousand kilometers, creating the extinctivity record of 0.4% for Olympic torch.

In May of 2008, the torch relay of Olympic Games was carried out in Guangdong.
